Seeing as summer is rapidly drawing to a close, it seems fitting that St. Olaf Nordic should offer an update on all of their summer adventures. In the absence of snow, we still manage to train (and even have fun!) in the dog days of summer. Our team is scattered all around the United States from the east coast to the west coast and our activities and training are just as variable. Mitchell has been spending the summer at Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve in Maine as an assistant camp counselor. He has collected an impressive variety of nicknames from his campers, such as “fungi,” “fathead” (hopefully named for the minnow species), and “Sensei.” Although he misses his teammates, he has been managing to have fun and train by rollerskiing and hiking around Maine. Mitchell found Mark Trail on the backroads of Maine Moving westward, several members of St. Olaf Nordic have remained in the general Minnesota area...
We’re back with more results! It’s been a busy interim and start to second semester for us, especially as racing ramped up. After our first weekend at Wirth, some of us kicked off interim break with the Minnesota College Championships skate relay race up at Snowflake in Duluth. Our men’s teams took 2 nd (Nels, Leif, and Jake) and 8 th (Graham, Mitchell, and Jeremy) and the women were 3 rd (Piper, Laura, and Nora) and 5 th (Shelby, Allie, and Amy), and Liza was a champ and raced the scramble leg with unfortunately no team to tag off to – so really, she was the first across the line by over half an hour! Some of these skiers then headed up to Ironwood, Michigan for an intense four-day training camp to get on snow, since the cities were pretty bare. First off, happy December 1st everyone! Snow is rare but the temps are cold, so we're praying for a little bit of precipitation. Today we hit the road bright and early (seriously, at 5:15 a.m.) to make it up to Elm Creek for a time trial against the Gustavus team. The first girls went off at 7. It was still dark out! Thank gosh for the lights on the course at Elm Creek Park Reserve, which has about a 1.25ish? kilometer loop of snow right now and opened yesterday. Anyway, we put a whole new meaning to "racing under the lights". It was an interesting race considering there were hoards of master blasters, high school skiers, and general skiers trying to enjoy the snow while we were racing, so we had to dodge a constant flow int he middle of the trail. It felt more like playing football than ski racing.. but it was still worth the good effort. Results and pictures are below.
